The Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon Originally uploaded by Bnita-Denise. Gorgeous, vast, uncomprehending, beautiful, ever-changing.

Sedona, AZ

Sedona, AZ Originally uploaded by Bnita-Denise. One of many breathtaking views. I think of this as the Buddha-head rock.

Me in Sedona, AZ

Me in Sedona, AZ Originally uploaded by Bnita-Denise. Check me out!! I loved Sedona, Arizona. Really. Loved it. It was hard for me to leave. But I did get a chance to walk around a little bit and take some absolutely gorgeous pictures. Being there made me extremely happy.

Really! Queen-size bed, fridge, microwave, bathtub in the bathroom, coffee maker, the heat works correctly, and wireless internet access to boot. This place kicks ass for only $49.95 with my AAA discount. Why in the world did I stay at Motel 6 that night? I won’t do it again.

Windmills!

Windmills! Originally uploaded by Bnita-Denise. I love the windmills in California. They are almost magical to me. I was so soothed by watching them twirl to their own rhythms — sometimes in perfect sync with others, sometimes not. I also love the harnessing of energy that is already there and in abundance.

Empanada’s Place

Empanada’s Place Originally uploaded by Bnita-Denise. I made a pilgrimmage here — Diane (my sister) and I used to get empanadas all of the time when I was in LA in 1995. I got a dozen empanadas: 2 chicken, potato, eggplant, spinach, broccoli, and corn. I know that y’all are jealous.

Blacken the Dog

Blacken, love-bunny Originally uploaded by Bnita-Denise. Blacken has got to be one of the sweetest dogs in the whole world. She’s a complex dog, though: quiet, she keeps to herself, and would be dangerous if she had an opposable thumb. She was so affectionate this morning, like she didn’t want me to leave. I just [...]

San Francisco style

I am in San Francisco, California, having the quintessential SF experience. I am sitting in the in a 3 floor live-work loft, next to a sleeping sassy French bulldog named “” (“Blacken” is downstairs). Yes — in SF, in a loft, working on my laptop, connected to the web via wi-fi, and just starting my [...]

Divine Path

divine path Originally uploaded by Bnita-Denise. This is what I saw as I was driving south on I-5 as I was leaving Seattle. The south was illuminated by shafts of light. I took it as an omen that the trip would go well, and that heading south is indeed the right thing for me to [...]

Due to an adminstrative error, I had to swing back through Seattle last night and fix some plane tickets with Lisa. I had intended to do the ticket change, eat and get back on the road and try to make it to at least Portland, but I was just too tired and hungry. Besides, I [...]

Hummus is easy, and so satisfying if you have a craving for it (like Mariko did). I make my hummus by “vibration”*, so I don’t have exact measurements. Ingredients: garbanzo beans (also known as chick peas or cecis) — you can use canned or dried ones; the dried ones you will have to soak overnight [...]

Okay, here is the the recipe for biscuits, buttermilk or otherwise. Taro, Mariko, Kenji, and Matt I Originally uploaded by Bnita-Denise. I had such a great time with these guys. I could have stayed a week. But I had to press on and work my way south.

Taro is such a cool person. His kids are fantastic! Mariko is 16, and beautiful, intelligent, sassy, and confident. Kenji is 14, and a gifted athlete (baseball, basketball, dance), smart, creative, mindful. I loved hanging out with these guys. I felt like part of the family. We spent most of the weekend just hanging out [...]

– quote from Maya Angelou, from the book of the same title. I’ve got mine, and they fit my feet like a glove. I’m off on my big adventure! My car is fixed: new brakes, new tires, new timing belt, oil change, new windshield even! Had a great going away party, hung out with folks [...]
